Although an increasing number of companies use decision & risk management methods to deal with complex and uncertain decisions, they still get consistent under-performance in typical business metrics leading to less value than expected, or, more perniciously, than possible. Uncertainty per se is not the culprit, rather a failure to make the best decisions under uncertainty – which are often non-intuitive. The real value-destroyers are biases and failing to plan for, and exploit, the different ways reality might evolve - if you under-estimate uncertainty, you are likely to under-invest in managing its consequences. Making the best decisions requires an accurate assessment of uncertainty (unbiased, neither optimistic nor pessimistic) – and an unbiased approach to managing its consequences – putting as much effort on capturing upside opportunities as mitigating risks. In this talk Prof Reidar B Bratvold (University of Stavanger and NTNU) will illustrate and discuss a valuation approach that brings an optimistic view to uncertainty. While there is no doubt that uncertainty can create losses, uncertainty can also be exploited by augmenting the upside and reducing the downside risks inherent in investments.

The principle of in-depth security has become an established principle among IT security experts. Multiple levels of control are to prevent or limit attackers' ability to damage systems. Prioritizing all security checks is not necessarily appropriate or cost effective. Knowledge of the attacker's approach should be the basis for prioritizing resources associated with cyber security. The need for costly security in depth initiatives will be less if adequate security initiatives are taken to stop the attackers in the start phase. This lecture will address the actual threat a company or organization is facing and how risk can be handled – based on real scenarios.

GRC questions should be an integral part off all organizations. In the absence of effective GRC, companies will suffer financial, legal and reputational harm. From a risk perspective, there is no greater risk to a company than poor GRC culture. Every company should therefore regularly ask itself this basic question; Have we effectively implemented our GRC program? My experience with companies of all sizes is that the answer will most likely be NO. Adopting internal guidelines and software systems are not the same as implementing a living GRC culture in an organization. In companies where misconduct or legal violations have occurred we often encounter GRC programs that are strong on paper but where the management has failed to effectively implement a strong ethical culture. Key concepts such as the tone from the top, risk based approach, training and internal controls are some of the building blocks in a compliance-wheel that should be the backbone of any living GRC-program. Based on international best practice, and especially on cases and guidelines from the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, this seminar will address how organizations can work more strategically with GRC and how a holistic view can improve implementation.

Integrated Risk Management is at the heart of business agility, driving business performance and assuring business conformance by enabling the entire organization to quickly, consistently, and efficiently make sound decisions – acting as a unified business. Perhaps most importantly, knowing your risks across the business creates opportunities – for cost-savings, competitive advantages, and alignment. As a business leader, creating these opportunities allows you to add value to your organization above and beyond risk mitigation. Owe Lie-Bjelland, Director GRC Solutions at Corporater, will focus on the business value of breaking down barriers and ending silo-based thinking by moving away from legacy internal reporting and separate risk registers to modern transparency where information flows horizontally and vertically throughout your organization. Unifying business performance, strategy, risk, and compliance management to maximize performance ensure sustainability and improve internal culture and accountability.

The future of risk management will look dramatically different than the current risk capabilities many are familiar with. Business units will have clear ownership for the risks that they take. Conduct and culture management will be pervasive throughout the organization. The role of the risk management function will also be clear — oversight and challenge. The risk function itself will be streamlined and much slimmer with a rationalized risk infrastructure that uses location and delivery models for cost optimization and leverages the power of digital for both efficiency and effectiveness. How do companies manage this transition and how can GRC Vendors play a vital part in helping them succeed?
